Frequently Asked Questions

When should I send an RFQ to a factory?
Send an RFQ when you have: (1) a clear product definition, (2) at minimum a sketch or drawing, ideally a CAD file or technical drawing, (3) an estimated order quantity, and (4) a target price range. Sending RFQs too early (vague idea, no specifications) will result in unhelpful responses or no response.
How many suppliers should I send RFQs to?
Send to 5–10 suppliers and expect 3–5 meaningful responses. Too few and you lack comparison; too many and you waste time managing responses. Pre-screen suppliers before sending — only contact those that match your product type and process.
What information should I NOT include in an RFQ?
Do not include: your complete CAD files or proprietary designs in the first RFQ (use simplified drawings), your exact target customer or brand name, your full budget (give a range), or your desperation ('I need this urgently'). Protect your IP while giving enough info for a quote.
How detailed should my RFQ be?
Detailed enough that a supplier can quote without asking 10 follow-up questions. Include: product name, description, material, approximate dimensions, quantity, target price range (optional), delivery location, and any specific requirements (certification, packaging). Leave room for the supplier to ask clarifying questions.
How do I compare RFQ responses from different suppliers?
Create a simple comparison table: unit price, tooling cost, MOQ, lead time, payment terms, included vs. excluded items (packaging, testing, shipping). Be careful — the cheapest quote often excludes things that are included in higher quotes. Ask each supplier to confirm what is and isn't included.
